Orlandon peliviikonloppu on jo takana päin ja auton nokka on lähestymässä taas kotikaupunkia Fort Worthia, jossa pelataan viimeiset runkosarjapelit, sekä playoffit 22.–24.7. Viimeisen viikon aikana olemme matkanneet Suomi-porukallamme läpi USA:n etelärannikon, kun matkamme vei meidät Houstonin, New Orleansin ja rantakohteen Panama City Beachin kautta Orlandoon. Orlandon peleistä oli odotettavissa paljon mielenkiintoisempia, kun muut joukkueet olivat saaneet lisävahvistuksia kokoonpanoihin. Hypätäänpä suoraan siis peliraportteihin:
Fort Worth Jaguars – Fresno Force 4-6
Viikonloppu alkoi siis meidän osaltamme hieman yllättäen, kun aiempien viikonloppujen heittopussi Fresno Force oli saanut paljonkin vahvistuksia ja joukkueen ero kentällä oli kuin yö ja päivä. Meidän pieni matkaväsymyksemme tähän päälle ja yllätys oli valmis ja Fresno onnistui nappaamaan ensimmäisen voittonsa. Tämä tekee sarjalle erittäin hyvää ja välieristäkin saadaan vielä mielenkiintoisia, kun ei ole enää ilmaista pääsyä finaaliin toisessa parissa.
Florida Vikings – Fort Worth Jaguars 5-6 RL
Floridankin joukkue oli saanut muutaman vahvistuksen ja heidän panoksensa kentällä näkyi vahvasti. Pelin kulku oli kaikin puolin aikamoista vuoristorataa ja pelissä nähtiin lähes kaikkea. Ensimmäinen erä meni kotijoukkue Floridalle 2-0, kun puolestaan toinen erä meille 3-0. Kolmannessa erässä näytti jo, että Florida nousee rinnalle ja ohi, kunnes Jaguars kapteeni Oskari Piisilä laukoi meidät ilman maalivahtia tasoihin viimeisellä minuutilla. Jatkoajalla Florida pääsi vielä pyörittämään ylivoimaa, mutta meidän puolustuksemme kesti ja näin päädyttiin rangaistuslaukauksille. Niissä nähtiin Jaguarsin puolelta niin näyttäviä suorituksia, että ylimääräinen piste lähti meidän matkaamme. Ottelua varjosti myös meidän Jaguars pelaajamme pahannäköinen loukkaantuminen ja ottelu jouduttiin keskeyttämään parinkymmenen minuutin ajaksi. Sarjan lääkintähenkilökunta on ollut kyllä hyvällä tasolla ja taas pitää nostaa hattua erinomaiselle toiminnalle tässä tilanteessa ja pelaaja saatiin illaksi sairaalasta kotiin ja nyt olo on normaali.
Fort Worth Jaguars – Utah Raptors 5-4 RL
Viikonlopun toinen pitkän kaavan trilleri nähtiin sunnuntain aamupelissä. Ensimmäinen erä taisteltiin tasaisissa merkeissä, mutta toisessa erässä Raptors pääsi karkaamaan kolmen maalin päähän, kun viimeiselle erätauolle lähdettiin 1-4 lukemissa. Pukukopissa yritettiin saada itsemme motivoitumaan takaisin peliin ja kaivamaan viimeiset voimat kropasta irti, vaikka 24 tunnin sisällä pelattiin jo kolmatta kertaa. Taisteluhenkeä saatiin kuitenkin kerättyä sen verran, että peli lyötiin tasoihin ja taas edessä oli jatkoaika. Jatkoajalla ei tässäkään pelissä päästy rimaa lähemmäs, joten rankkareille taas mentiin. Jälleen Jaguarsin puolelta nähtiin erittäin näyttäviä suorituksia (ainakin Onni Forssin suoritus kannattaa käydä katsomassa solidsportin highlighteista) ja näin Jaguarsille viikonlopun toinen lisäpiste.

Viimeiselle viikonlopulle lähdetään siis erittäin tasaisissa merkeissä. Fort Worth Jaguars on vielä sarjan kärjessä 19 pisteellä, mutta enää vain yhden pisteen erolla Florida Vikingsiin. Utah Raptors on kolmantena 15 pisteellä ja Fresno Force pitää perää nyt 3 pisteellä. Fresnon pelistä tosiaan pitää mainita, että kaksi ensimmäistä viikonloppua meni 6 tappiolla ja -77 maalierolla, kun tämän viikonlopun saldona oli 1 voitto, 2 tappiota ja maaliero vain -4, joten varmasti tulevat antamaan kovan vastuksen, sille joka runkosarjan voiton onnistuu nappaamaan.
Tuomaritoimintaan saatiin suomalaisväriä mukaan, kun Janne Sjögren liittyi mukaan viikonlopun tuomaristoon. Täytyy kyllä mainita, että tuomaritoiminta oli edelleen lievästi sanottuna ailahtelevaa. Ehkä vain yksittäisten pelaajien ja tuomareiden tasoerojen ja tottumuksien välistä on vaikea löytää linja, joka sopii kaikille.
Muutaman sanan voisin taas sanoa peliolosuhteista. Orlandon pelit pelattiin paikallisen lukion liikuntasalissa parketilla. Itseäni alusta ei haitannut, kun omille pelivuosille on osunut muutamakin parketti matkan varrelle, mutta osa pelaajista kärsi ehkä enemmän. Hallilta löytyi tällä kertaa kunnon pukuhuoneet ja suihkut, joten tässä eteenpäin on menty, vaikka suihkuista tuli ulos vain tulikuumaa vettä. Puitteiden puolesta onneksi ollaan edelleen eteenpäin menossa ja saimmekin jo tietoomme, että finaaliviikonloppujen peleissä saadaan World Gamesien alusta käyttöömme ja halli on ihan oikea urheiluhalli, jossa löytyy kunnon pukuhuoneet kaikille ja yleisölle on juoma- ja ruokatarjoilua.

Final stretch of NAFL
The Orlando weekend is now behind us, and we have our car heading towards our hometown Fort Worth, where we’ll close out the season on July 22nd-24th. In the last week our group of Finns has travelled through the South Coast of the US as we have passed Houston, New Orleans, and Panama City Beach on our way to Orlando. The games in Orlando were scheduled to be very interesting as the other teams have gotten some reinforcements. So, let’s jump right into the game reports:
Fort Worth Jaguars – Fresno Force 4-6
Our weekend started with a bit of a surprise as the past weekend’s automatic points were not free anymore. Fresno had gotten a real facelift with their roster additions and the difference in the team was like night and day. To add our fatigue from the drive over and the surprise was completed as Fresno managed to win their first game in the league. This will make the final weekend very interesting as it’s no longer a given that whoever wins the regular season, has a free pass to the final.
Florida Vikings – Fort Worth Jaguars 5-6 SO
Florida also had some new faces in the lineup, so they were more dangerous than ever. The game itself was very much of a rollercoaster as we saw all kinds of events during the game. The home team Vikings won the first period 2-0, while we managed to edge them out in the second 3-0. In the third period it seemed that Florida would get the last laugh until Jaguars captain Oskari Piisilä scored the game-tying goal in the last minute, while we were playing without the goalie. In the overtime, the Vikings had a chance to end the game on power play, but the Jaguars defense held strong and so we went to the shootouts. The flashy shots of the Jaguars ensured that we left with the extra point in our pockets. We also had an unfortunate incident as one of our Jaguars players got injured and the game was paused for a good 20 minutes or so. I have to give a shout out to the medical staff of the NAFL as again we got professional help really fast, and we got our player back home from the hospital the same evening and he’s now feeling fine.
Fort Worth Jaguars – Utah Raptors 5-4 SO
The second long thriller of the weekend was our Sunday morning game against Utah Raptors. The first period was really close, but on the second period the Raptors managed to gain a 3-goal lead heading to the final break. We tried our best to motivate ourselves back into the game and get the last of the energy out of our bodies, even though we were playing for the third time in the last 24 hours. In the end we got just enough fight to tie the game and take it to the overtime. In the overtime neither team got closer to a goal than a crossbar, so again we went to the shootouts. And again, we scored some flashy goals (especially the goal by Onni Forss is worth to check-out at the solidsport highlights) and so we earned our second extra point of the weekend.

We are heading to the last weekend in a close situation where anything can happen. Fort Worth Jaguars is still in the first place with 19 points, but only a point behind is the Florida Vikings. Utah Raptors is third with 15 points and Fresno Force is still in the last place, now with 3 points. Like I said earlier though, Fresno is not the same team as in the past. The first 2 weekends they lost all 6 games with a goal differential of -77, while this weekend they went 1-2 with a goal differential of just -4. I’m sure whoever earns the first place after the regular season has their hands full with them in the semifinals.
The referees got some help this weekend as well with Finnish referee Janne Sjögren joined their ranks. I have to say though the refereeing was still questionable to put it mildly. Maybe it’s just hard to find common ground between the different level and habits of the players and the referees that suits everyone.
I also want to say a few things about the facilities and playing environment. We played the Orlando games in the gym of a local high school, which had a wood floor. I have played so many years that I have encountered wood floors many times, so I didn’t have problems with it, but some other players might have felt different. At least this time we had a proper locker room with showers, even though they only produced boiling hot water. Still, it’s another step forwards and I know for sure that the last weekend we’ll have a proper sports hall with the World Games floor, a locker room for every team and concession stands for the fans.
